NOTES TO TABLET IV, COLUMN i

Very little has been discovered of Tablet IV. If the two fragments that attest to the five lines here are correctly placed at the opening of Tablet IV, and the fragments of columns v and vi below are in their proper place, the whole of Tablet IV is devoted to the journey of Gilgamesh and Enkidu to the cedar forest. Here they have just begun the journey. In contrast to the Sumerian text, where the men are accompanied by troops, in this version only the two men make the hazardous journey. Providing them guidance is the god Shamash.
